Canoe rally at Swimming Stadium

MORECAMBE  Swimming Stadium, which is usually associated with either bathing beauty contests or swimming championships, was the venue on Saturday, for the first canoe rally organised by the Balmoral Road Secondary School’s Canoe Club.

Fifteen canoes, some of which had been made and others bought by the competitors, took part in races, tug-o-war, manoeuvrability and jousting contests.

Small shields which could be attached to the side of the canoes, were awarded to the overall winners of the singles and doubles competitions. They both went to the Balmoral Club and were presented by the school’s headmaster, Mr. H. Whitaker.

SPRINT THRILLS

One of the most thrilling races was the doubles sprint in which the Balmoral canoe “Ebb” tied for first place with St. James’s Boys’ Club’s “Hep-Cat.”

Both finished in 45 secs. Third was the canoe “Guy Gibson,” owned by the 5th Morecambe Boy Scout Group in 46 secs.

Mr. C. Metcalfe, the referee told the “Guardian” on Monday that it is hoped the Morecambe and Heysham Corporation would allow the event to take place yearly at the stadium.

Other officials were: Mr. B. D. Sandford, starter, Mr. E. B. Hinchcliffe, Mr. J. Butler, whips , Mr. F. L. Dawson, treasurer, Mr. R. F. Jenkin, Mr. J. Battersby, announcers, Mr. K. G. Whiteley, recorder, Mr. J. Sidebotham, timekeeper, Mr. H. Whitaker, Mr. A Sawley, Mr. H. Price, judges.
