Marries Scorton Vicar’s Daughter

Miss Hilda M. Jackson, younger daughter of the Rev. Edwin Jackson, Vicar of Scorton, was married at St. Peter’s Church, Scorton, on Wednesday, to Mr. Charles A. Winn, second son of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Winn, of Hall Green, Birmingham. The Church had been decorated by the Day School children, and the service, which was choral, was conducted by the bride’s father, assisted by the Rev. A. B. Dex, Vicar of St. Thomas’s, Garstang. Miss Aileen Butchart was organist.

The bride, who is chairman of Scorton Young Conservatives, member of the Church choir and Scorton Women’s Institute Committee was for three years a nurse at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. The bridegroom is Field Commissioner of Boy Scouts for North-West Lancashire and North, East and West Cumberland. He was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy during the war, and was mentioned in dispatches for service in the Mediterranean.

Mr. Maurice Sharpe was best man, and Messrs. T. R. Yates, Gordon Yates, J. Robinson (Vicar’s warden) and R. Brewer (people’s warden), groomsmen and ushers. The bell ringers afterwards rang a peal in honour of the occasion.

After the ceremony a reception was held at Scorton Vicarage when there were present about 100 guests. Later Mr. and Mrs. Winn left for their honeymoon in the Lake District.

Among the numerous presents were gifts from the Blackpool and District Boy Scouts Association; Lancaster Scouters; Cumberland Scouts; Morecambe and Heysham Scouters; Gilwell Field Commissioners; Carnforth Scouts; Scorton Church Choir ; Scorton Mothers’ Union; Scorton Young Conservatives.

Charles Arthur Winn was born 15 Aug 1914 son of  Austin Herbert and  Jessie Gertrude Winn.
In 1939 he was living at 59 Watwood Road, Birmingham, he was then a  Furnishing Salesman in a Departmental Stores. 
He died in 1999 in Surrey.
