To all Scout Section members – a reminder that the 2012 hiking competitions will take place over the weekend of 22nd and 23rd September.

Your chance to get out into the beautiful local countryside and to test your navigational skills. Older scouts also have the opportunity to camp out overnight and to practice lightweight cooking techniques.
Two-day Competition for Older Scouts
The hike on Saturday will be a route of about 9 miles reporting to several bases, with an overnight camp. The teams will be given a printed map showing the route they have to follow and the bases they have to report to. They will have to prepare a Route Plan for the route with a photocopy to be handed in at the start of the competition for checking.
The teams will gain points on their Route Card as well as the accuracy of their timing between the specified bases.
The Sunday hike will be about 6 miles long, the same distance as the junior competition.
The teams will be expected to carry all their equipment and food they require for the weekend but tents and sleeping bags will be transported to the camp site by the District. They will be able to leave their tentage etc. at the camp site for the Sunday hike.
The teams should consist of 4 Scouts aged between 10.5 and 14.5. (They must not be 14.5 on that day) but we think the two-day competition would be more suitable for 13 and 14 year olds
One day Competition for Younger Scouts
The Sunday hike will be about 6 miles long, starting and finishing at the same point, following an arranged route, reporting at bases and answering questions. It will be the same route that the older Scouts will be taking but in the reverse direction.
The teams should consist of 4 Scouts aged between 10.5 and 12. They must not be 13 on that day. The Sunday competition would be more suitable for the younger age group 10.5 to 11.
