SCOUTING NEWS AND NOTES
D.C. To Attend Camp At Glasson Dock
PATROL LEADERS and Seconds, under 15 years—i.e. not Senior Scouts—-will have an opportunity of meeting the District Commissioner if they attend the week-end camp at Glasson Dock on July 2/3rd, which is being specially planned to give them useful training in camping essentials. Instructions in camp lay-out, gadgets, tracking are among items on the syllabus. Ample facilities will also be afforded for recreation and there will be a campfire. Dr. Stevenson will give a talk on “Camp Hygiene”—a very necessary and important thing for all campers to know. I understand that complete kit should be taken, primus stove, rations and a notebook, and those wishing to participate in this venture, should apply to Scoutmaster W. Rutherford immediately.
16th TROOP’S COUNTRY DEN.
The 16th Lancaster (St. Paul’s) are the latest troop to acquire the use of a country den for patrol camping and this facility should be of great help to them when they have completed the necessary overhaul to put the den into decent condition, a task which is now engaging their attention.
A note received from this quarter mentions that some reorganisation in leadership has been taking place. Mr. John Hodgson, an active associate of St. Paul’s Church, and who for many years has had the oversight of the 21st. Lancaster Sea Scouts, is to be the 16th’s Group Scoutmaster and he will continue to have the assistance of Scoutmasters Martindale and Jepson, who have carried on the troop activities for some time. Others lending a hand with the re-organisation are Geoffrey Parker and Douglas Rennison. The troop will camp this year in August with the 13th Lancaster at Ulpha, in Cumberland.
The Cub Pack is also reported to be making progress and eight Cubs have recently gained the Collector and Guide badges. Assistant Cubmaster K. Atkinson is now warranted. The Cub helpers are: David Walker and Matthew Cope. Derek Gardner is expected to return to the Pack from military service later in the year, when David Walker leaves for a similar spell.
Scoutmaster Cyril Jepson will be attending the Rover Moot in Norway in August as a 13th Lancaster Rover. By then he hopes to have completed his Scout Wood Badge Course (Part II).
A SILENT WORKER.
Mr. H. Sanderson, of 47 Ashfield Avenue, Lancaster, will not be available for the distribution of badges during the period, June 25th to July 9th, owing to holidays. The next day for badge issues will be Tuesday, July 12th. The Badge Secretary’s work does not bring him much in the public eye, but in an Association of this size he can have a lot to do and in setting aside one evening per week for distribution in addition to the record keeping he fills an
essential role as a layman in the smooth running of the Scouting organisation.
In welcoming Mr. Sanderson as the successor to Mr. Penny we hope that he will have a happy association with us. We are – sorry that the latter who has acted for some years, and who for a period served as Quartermaster and Sports Recorder, has had to resign since the annual meeting owing to pressure of other duties, and we accord him our thanks for the services he always cheerfully and efficiently rendered.— AKELA.
