Appointment of Assistant District Commissioner for Adventurous Activities
I am delighted to announce that Stuart Lockton has agreed to become our Assistant District Commissioner for Adventurous Activities replacing Peter Willingham who has moved to Chorley.
Stuart is well placed to build on the excellent work that Peter has started. Professionally, Stuart has an extensive background in leading, supervising and managing adventurous activity provision and has a thorough knowledge of activity rules. In Scouting, Stuart has been involved as a parent over many years and has most recently been an Assistant Explorer Scout Leader at Silverhelme Explorer Scout Unit.
As you know, increasing support to Scout Groups is one of the current key objectives for the District and Stuart will be responsible for ensuring that we are offering safe and adventurous activities across all sections. With that in mind I have asked him to focus on the following priorities initially:
– Ensure that existing permit holders who are coming up for review are supported through the permit renewal process.
– Identify and support leaders with ‘activity interests’ to help them gain Scout permits.
– Highlight adventurous activity opportunities and training for adult leaders who want to develop their skills in specific areas.
– Promote activities that can be done easily without needing someone with an activity permit.
In the past two years we have seen a significant increase in the number of adults who hold adventurous activities permits- long may this continue. Stuart will be involved in the Skills and Chills event on the 14-16th June providing advice and support on this topic. I look forward to introducing you to him them.
Yours in Scouting,
Pat Griffin
District Commissioner
